Screen-Free Math Practice: A Parent's Starter Kit
No app, no login, no worksheet. Six routines that fit into the gaps of an ordinary day, built around methods cheap enough that a child can actually run them in their head.
Screen-free math practice works best in short spoken bursts built into gaps you already have: the car, a queue, the five minutes before dinner. Ten minutes, four times a week, one technique at a time until it is automatic. The routines below need no app, no worksheet and no preparation, and each is built around a method cheap enough for a child to actually run mentally.
One rule before the list: never ask for a calculation the child does not have a cheap method for. Asking for 97 × 98 with the school method is asking them to fail. Asking for it with Nikhilam takes four seconds. The routine is only as good as the method underneath it.
1. The car ×11
Any two-digit number times 11. Write the outer digits, add the middle. 47 × 11: 4, then 4 + 7 = 11 so 1 carry 1, then 7 → 517. About two seconds against roughly 15 longhand.
Use number plates. It is the fastest technique to learn and the best first win, which is why it is the one to start with.
2. The supermarket ×25
Anything × 25 is divide by 4, then × 100. 48 × 25: 48 ÷ 4 = 12, so 1200. About three seconds against 18. Same family: ×5 is halve then ×10, ×50 is halve then ×100.
Quantities on shelves are full of these. So are bulk prices, which makes it feel useful rather than drilled.
3. The change check
1000 − 357, or any subtraction from a round base. Subtract every digit from 9 and the last from 10: 6, 4, 3 → 643. Three seconds, no borrowing.
This one converts fastest into real life because change and totals are everywhere, and a child who beats the till display once will keep doing it unprompted.
4. The squaring party trick
Any number ending in 5, squared. Multiply the front part by the next number up, append 25. 85²: 8 × 9 = 72 → 7225. About four seconds against 25.
This is the one children show their friends, which matters more than it sounds. A technique that gets performed gets practised.
5. The near-100 pair
Two numbers close to 100. 97 × 98: shortfalls of 3 and 2, cross-subtract 97 − 2 = 95, multiply the shortfalls 3 × 2 = 06 → 9506. About four seconds against 35.
This is the technique that convinces sceptical older children, because the school method for it is visibly miserable.
6. The tip and the percentage
Break the percentage into pieces you already know. 17.5% of 360: 10% is 36, 5% is 18, 2.5% is 9 → add for 63. About five seconds against 20.
Restaurant bills, sale prices and anything with a discount sticker. This is the technique adults use most and the one children most enjoy beating a parent at.

Start with routine three tonight. Ask "what's 1000 minus 357?" and let them struggle for five seconds. Then show them: 9 minus 3 is 6, 9 minus 5 is 4, 10 minus 7 is 3. 643. Then give them 1000 − 428 and watch them do it in three.

- Never more than ten minutes. The routine has to survive a bad week. Short is what makes it survive.
- One technique at a time until it is automatic. Two at once produces a child who is unsure which rule applies and concludes they are bad at this.
- Spoken, not written. The moment paper appears it becomes schoolwork.
- You do it too, out loud. A parent visibly calculating is worth more than a parent supervising.
- Stop while they still want another one. Always.
The marker that it is working is not accuracy. It is when they answer before you have finished the question and look surprised at themselves. "Wait, I just did that in my head."
