Why the Best Math Practice Still Happens Without a Screen
The ed-tech backlash is not nostalgia. For math specifically there is a mechanism: a screen that supplies the answer removes the retrieval step, and retrieval is where fluency is built. Ten minutes, paper optional.
For math specifically, screens remove the step that builds the skill. An app that checks the answer, offers a hint, or supplies the next number replaces retrieval, and retrieval under mild effort is the thing that turns a method into fluency. Mental arithmetic needs no screen at all, which makes it the one subject where going device-free costs nothing and gains the mechanism.
Parents have been arriving at this independently, and schools are starting to move. The data on that is useful to see before the practical part.
The backlash is real and it is measured

61% of district and school leaders said parents feel there is too much technology in schools. More than half of educators surveyed believed ed tech has a negative impact on students' social-emotional development and mental health, while 55% still reported positive academic effects. Notably, 74% said their districts had not reduced technology investment despite the pushback.
That last figure is the interesting one. Parent sentiment has moved considerably faster than district budgets. Which means for the next few years this is a gap families will have to close at home rather than wait for schools to close for them.
Individual schools are moving. At Sapulpa Middle School in Oklahoma, 70% of parents and 99% of staff reported there was too much classroom technology; about a third of its 45 teachers now run technology-free days each week, with students on physical workbooks and hands-on lessons instead of Chromebooks. In Los Angeles Unified, roughly 300 parents turned up to listening sessions to raise screen time.
Why math is the strongest case
Most subjects lose something real when you remove the device. Research needs sources. Writing benefits from editing. Science simulations show things a diagram cannot.
Mental arithmetic loses nothing, because the entire activity happens in the head. The screen was never carrying the content. It was carrying the checking, the prompting and the reward loop. And each of those, however well designed, sits precisely where the effort was supposed to be.
Cognitive offloading research is consistent on this: when a tool reliably handles a cognitive step, the internal encoding that would have built the skill stops happening. A math app that tells your child they are right removes the moment where they had to decide whether they were.
What "screen-free" does not mean
It does not mean rejecting technology, and it does not mean a worksheet. Worksheets are paper versions of the same problem: high volume, low engagement, and they still train the expensive method.
It means practice that happens in the head, out loud, with another person, in the ordinary gaps of a day. Ten minutes. No app, no login, no streak to maintain.
Why it only works if the method is cheap
Here is where most screen-free advice falls over. Ask a child to do 97 × 98 in their head using the school method and you are asking for six sequential steps and three carries held in working memory, against a capacity of about five to seven items. They will fail, feel stupid, and want the app back. Reasonably.
With Nikhilam it is two steps: both numbers fall short of 100 by 3 and 2, cross-subtract to get 95, multiply the shortfalls to get 06, answer 9506. About four seconds against roughly 35, and nothing to hold.
Screen-free practice becomes sustainable exactly when the mental method stops being the punishing option. That is the dependency nobody mentions.
