What Schools Learned When They Took the Tablets Away

A third of teachers at one Oklahoma middle school now run technology-free days. Districts are debating laptop carts again. What the schools pulling back have actually learned — and the one subject where it matters most.

Schools reducing classroom devices in 2026 are not banning technology. They are carving out protected time without it. At Sapulpa Middle School in Oklahoma, where 70% of parents and 99% of staff said there was too much classroom technology, about a third of the 45 teachers now run technology-free days each week using physical workbooks and hands-on lessons. Other districts are revisiting laptop carts instead of one-device-per-child.

The pattern in what they are doing is more useful to parents than the headline, because it is reproducible at home, and math is the subject where it transfers most directly.

How widespread this is

EdWeek Research Center, February–March 2026: 61% of district and school leaders reported parents feel there is too much technology in schools, and more than half of educators believed ed tech negatively affects social-emotional development and mental health. At the same time, 74% said their district had not reduced technology spending in response.

Read those together and the picture is clear: sentiment has moved much faster than procurement. Most districts are still fully deployed while most leaders know parents are unhappy about it. Which is why the schools acting early are worth studying: they are running the experiment the rest have not started.

What they actually changed

Three things recur, and none of them is a ban.

Protected time rather than prohibition. A technology-free day, or a device-free period, rather than removing devices entirely. The device stays available for the tasks it is good at.

Shared devices instead of one-to-one. Several districts are debating a return to laptop carts. A device you fetch for a purpose gets used differently from one open on the desk all day.

Explicit criteria for when tech is appropriate. Wichita Public Schools has been developing grade-level guidance on appropriate device use rather than leaving it to each teacher.

What this does not settle

It is worth being straight about the limits here. These are policy decisions and survey findings, not controlled studies. No one has shown that removing tablets raises test scores, and the same EdWeek survey found 55% of educators still report positive academic effects from ed tech.

What is documented is what parents and staff report, and what schools are choosing to do about it. Anyone presenting this as proof that screens lower achievement is going further than the evidence supports.

Why math is the clearest case

For most subjects, removing the device removes something real. For mental arithmetic it removes nothing, because the entire activity happens in the head. The screen was carrying the checking and the prompting, and both of those sit exactly where the effort was supposed to be.

Cognitive offloading research is consistent on this point: when a tool reliably handles a cognitive step, the encoding that would have built the skill stops happening. An app that confirms your child is right removes the moment where they had to judge it themselves.

The catch nobody mentions

Take the screen away and hand a child 97 × 98 with the school method and you have asked for six sequential steps and three carries against a working memory of about five to seven items. They will fail and want the device back, and they will be right to.
