Most Vedic Math articles either handwave the questions or dodge them with marketing. That is not useful to a parent trying to decide whether to commit fifteen minutes of their child's evening to it. So we asked hundreds of parents what they wanted to know before signing up. These ten questions kept appearing. Each answer is anchored to a research citation you can look up.
1. "Is this real math or just tricks?"
Real math. Every Vedic technique is a mathematical identity — a rearrangement of the standard algorithm that produces the same answer. Near-100 multiplication (Nikhilam) is the algebraic identity (a−x)(a−y) = a(a−x−y) + xy applied to a=100. There are no tricks; there are shortcuts your school textbook did not include.
2. "Will it conflict with what they learn at school?"
No. Same answers, faster path. Your child can use either method and be correct. Jo Boaler's Stanford research on mathematical mindsets found that students who see multiple methods for the same operation develop a stronger, more flexible understanding of the underlying concepts — not a confused one.

3. "My kid is behind — will this frustrate them?"
Behind kids often benefit fastest. Vedic techniques do not depend on already knowing standard long multiplication. 5. "Isn't free YouTube content enough?"
YouTube shows tricks. It does not build skill. Ying Xu at Harvard studied students learning math via AI-explained content and found the same pattern: students understood each explanation but could not solve the next problem independently. Watching is comprehension. Practice is skill.

6. "Why not a live tutor?"
A good tutor is worth their fee. But most tutoring is $60–150 per hour, once a week, and the child still practices alone the other six days — with the same method that has been failing them. Directly. Standardised exams are time tests. Mark Ashcraft's 2007 research showed that identical-knowledge students diverged by 80–120 points on standardised tests based purely on execution speed. 9. "My kid is advanced. Is this too easy?"
Level 1 (grades 4–6) may be trivial for an advanced middle-schooler. 10. "Will they retain it in 6 months?"
