They're stages, and researchers studying math avoidance in children have traced this progression back to 1st grade.
Frustration is normal. Every child hits material that's hard. The shift to avoidance is different. A frustrated child pushes back and tries again. An avoiding child stops engaging before they've tried, because engagement now predicts a bad outcome. By the time avoidance takes over, the loop is running on its own.
What math avoidance in children actually looks like — by age
Ramirez's 2018 review of the math anxiety literature estimated that math anxiety affects roughly 93 million adults in the United States. Almost all of them were children who hit a wall, usually around multiplication, fractions, or early algebra, and never got the experience that would have changed the prediction. The wall didn't have to be permanent. It became permanent because no one interrupted the loop.

Math anxiety affects an estimated 93 million adults in the United States. The pattern begins in childhood, compounds through avoidance, and becomes self-sustaining by the time the child reaches secondary school.
The progression by age is specific. At 7: forgets homework. At 9: cries before starting. At 11: stops raising a hand in class. At 13: chooses courses and eventually careers around the story that they're not a math person. Same loop, wider consequences. The earlier the interruption, the smaller the rewrite needed.
What interrupts the loop — and what doesn't
More practice of the same method doesn't interrupt the loop. It confirms it. The child already predicts failure with that material. More exposure to it adds more evidence for that prediction.
Jo Boaler's research at Stanford identified the mechanism that actually works. A student who produces a correct answer with a method they'd never seen before — especially when they expected to fail — updates their self-description. Not dramatically. Just enough to change the prediction for the next session. One correct answer makes the next attempt more likely. More attempts mean more practice. The loop starts running in the other direction.

Students who experience early success with a new method update their math identity. One correct answer in the first session is enough to shift the prediction from "I will fail" to "I can do this kind of problem."
The distinction that matters for parents: is your child frustrated or avoiding? Frustrated means they're still engaging. Avoiding means the prediction is already running. Both are fixable. But avoidance requires a different response than frustration — not more pressure, not a softer version of the same material. A different method, producing a win the child didn't expect. What stops avoidance before it becomes the pattern
The win has to come fast. Before the prediction fires. The child who sits down expecting to fail needs to be correct before that expectation has time to confirm itself.
