Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam
Vertically and crosswise (urd · hva tir · yag · bhyam)
What it means
Multiply ANY two numbers — any size, any digits — using one steady pattern. This is the general-purpose Vedic multiplication method. The same pattern also extends to polynomial multiplication and to squaring (the "Duplex" method).
Worked example
Multiply 23 × 14. Right column: 3 × 4 = 12, write 2 carry 1. Crosswise: (2 × 4) + (3 × 1) = 11, plus carry = 12, write 2 carry 1. Left column: 2 × 1 = 2, plus carry = 3. Read top-to-bottom: 322.
