Paravartya Yojayet

Transpose and apply (pa · ra · var · tya yo · ja · yet)

What it means

Divide one polynomial by another — or one big number by another — without trial and error. Standard long division makes you guess what the next digit of the answer should be. Paravartya replaces the guess with a mechanical pattern: flip the sign of the divisor's tail digits, and apply.

Worked example

Divide 1234 ÷ 112. "Flip the tail" means: take the divisor's last digits (here, 12) and negate each one, giving (−1, −2). Bring down the 1 — that's the start of the quotient. Multiply 1 × (−1, −2) and add into the next two digits: 2 + (−1) = 1, 3 + (−2) = 1. Bring down 4. Quotient = 11, remainder = 2. No guessing.
