Why Tutoring Didn't Fix It: What Kumon, Khan Academy and Private Tutors Miss

Most parents who find us have already tried two or three of these. The pattern is consistent enough to be diagnostic: all three train volume and understanding. Neither is what's actually limiting your child.

Tutoring usually fails on math for a specific reason: Kumon trains volume, Khan Academy trains understanding, and a private tutor trains whatever is on this week's homework. All three assume the underlying arithmetic is fast enough to build on. For most struggling students it is not, and no amount of any of the three changes that, because none of them change the method.

If you have tried two or three of these and watched the grade move by half a letter, this is not a story about your child not trying. Here is what each one actually does, what it is good at, and the gap all three share.

What Kumon is actually for

Kumon is a volume system. Daily worksheets, incremental difficulty, repetition until speed improves. It works on what it targets: a child who does Kumon consistently gets faster at the methods they were already taught.

The limit is in that last clause. Kumon makes the school method faster; it does not replace it. If the bottleneck is that long multiplication costs six steps and 35 seconds, a thousand repetitions get a child to maybe 25 seconds and a lot of accumulated boredom. The ceiling is set by the method, and Kumon does not touch the method.

What Khan Academy is actually for

Khan is an explanation system, and an excellent one. Free, well-sequenced, clear. If your child missed a concept, Khan will fill it.

But watching a clear explanation produces understanding, and understanding is not execution. Harvard research on skill formation names this gap directly: a student who follows a worked demonstration feels they have learned it, then cannot produce it unaided. Every parent has watched their child nod through a video and stall on the next question. That is not inattention. It is the difference between recognising a method and having automated it.

What a private tutor is actually for

A good tutor is the most responsive option and the most expensive. They diagnose, they adapt, they catch misconceptions a program cannot.

The structural problem is the curriculum. A tutor is almost always working on this week's homework, because that is what the family is anxious about and what the hour gets spent on. Homework support is triage. It keeps the grade from falling. It rarely rebuilds the layer underneath, because there is never a week where the homework can wait.

The gap all three share

Each addresses a real need. None addresses the one that is usually binding.

Standard long multiplication requires holding three or four intermediate values in working memory across six or more steps. Children's working memory holds about five to seven items. The method sits at the edge of capacity, so mistakes cluster in the carries rather than the concepts, and timed tests feel qualitatively different from homework.

More volume on an overloaded method produces a slightly faster overloaded method. More explanation of an overloaded method produces a child who understands exactly why they keep making the same error. Neither reduces the load.

What changes when the method changes

Vedic Math is sixteen pattern-based techniques. Standard algebraic identities taught as first-choice moves. The relevant property here is cost, not novelty.

97 × 98 by long multiplication: six intermediate steps, about 35 seconds, carries to track. By Nikhilam: two steps, about four seconds. Both numbers fall short of 100 by 3 and 2. Cross-subtract for 95, multiply the shortfalls for 06, write 9506.

Two steps fits inside working memory where six did not. That is the mechanism. The child who was making carry errors stops making them, not because they became more careful, but because there are no longer four things to hold.

Ask your child for 48 × 25. School method: about 18 seconds. Vedic: 48 ÷ 4 = 12, then 12 × 100 = 1200. About three seconds, no carries at all. The trick is that ×25 is the same as ÷4 then ×100, and halving is easier than multiplying.

Where the others still earn their place

This is not an argument for dropping everything else. Khan is the right tool for a missed concept. A tutor is the right tool for a specific diagnosed misconception or an exam in six weeks. Kumon suits a family that wants externally enforced daily structure.

The sequencing is what matters. Fix the arithmetic layer first, and the other three start working better, because they are no longer being asked to compensate for a method that costs too much.

The marker to watch for

It is not the next report card. It is a sentence, usually within the first two weeks: "wait, I just did that in my head."

A child who believes they are bad at math will not be argued out of it, by you or by a tutor. They get out of it by doing something in four seconds that used to take them 35, in front of someone whose opinion they care about.
