How Parents Pass Math Anxiety to Their Kids Without Saying a Word
You never said 'I'm bad at math' out loud. You didn't have to. New research on more than 3,000 teachers shows adult math anxiety measurably lowers the achievement of the students they teach — and the same channel runs at your kitchen table.
Math anxiety transmits from adults to children through behaviour, not statements. Hesitating, handing the problem to the other parent, saying "ask your teacher," or getting visibly tense at homework time all communicate the same thing. New 2026 research on more than 3,000 teachers found that adult math anxiety measurably lowers student achievement, and the mechanism is the same one operating at your kitchen table.
This is not a piece about parental guilt. It is about the one intervention that actually interrupts the transfer, which turns out to be easier than talking about it.

A survey of more than 3,000 educators teaching mathematics in grades 3–8 in Indiana found that students taught by less mathematically confident teachers scored roughly one percentile point lower on average, with effects concentrated among students already struggling. The author notes the relationship may run in both directions — anxious teachers were also disproportionately assigned to struggling classes.
One percentile point sounds small, and taken alone it is. What makes it matter is the compounding: a student can meet several anxious math teachers across grades 3 to 8, and the researcher flags exactly that accumulation as the concern. And the study cannot fully separate cause from assignment — teachers may have become less confident because they were given the hardest classes. That caveat is the author's own and it should travel with the finding.
Why the parent channel is stronger than the teacher one
A child gets one math teacher per year and roughly an hour a day. They get you for eighteen years, in the room where homework happens, at the moment the problem is hardest.
Earlier work by Ramirez and colleagues found math anxiety measurable in first-graders, before they had been taught multiplication, and already predictive of third-grade achievement. Six-year-olds have not yet had enough math experience to have formed that view from evidence. They are reading it off the adults around them.
What transmission actually looks like
None of these are things you would ever say deliberately. All of them are read clearly by a child.
- The handoff. "Ask your dad, he's the maths one." Said once it is logistics. Said routinely it establishes that math belongs to a certain kind of person and you are not it.
- The sympathy. "I was terrible at math too, don't worry." Meant as comfort. Received as permission, and as confirmation that this is hereditary.
- The pace change. You slow down, re-read the question twice, reach for the calculator. Children track adult confidence far more accurately than adults expect.
- The avoidance. Math homework moves to last. It gets done at the kitchen table with the TV on. It is the one subject that comes with a negotiation.
Why "be more positive about math" fails
The standard advice is to speak more positively and model a growth mindset. It rarely works, for a simple reason: children calibrate on behaviour, not commentary. A parent who says math is wonderful while visibly bracing at a homework question has sent one message, and it is not the spoken one.
You cannot perform confidence you do not have, in front of the person who knows you best, several nights a week, for years.
What actually interrupts it
Become fast at one thing. Not competent at the curriculum. Fast at one visible technique your child can watch you do.
This works because it changes the behaviour rather than the script. A parent who can square any two-digit number ending in 5 in four seconds is not performing confidence about math. They are confident about that, and it shows in the channel the child is reading.
85² by longhand is six steps and about 25 seconds. With the Ekadhikena sutra: take the 8, multiply by the next number up, 8 × 9 = 72, then append 25. Answer 7225. About four seconds, one multiplication, nothing to hold.

The handoff stops, because you no longer need it for this. The sympathy stops, because it is no longer true. And your child watches a parent who was supposedly bad at math do something they cannot do, which is a far stronger signal than anything you could say.
Then they try it. And you get the sentence: "wait, I just did that in my head." Except this time you got there first, which is the part that breaks the inheritance.
