Three Vedic sutras that give you back 15 minutes on JEE Math

Almost every JEE Math paper leans on three specific arithmetic patterns. Master these three, and you have added 15 minutes of thinking time to your exam — the difference between attempting 25 questions and attempting 20.

  • Nikhilam (near-base multiplication): for products of numbers near 100, 1000, or 10000. 97 × 98 in 4 seconds without pen touching paper.
  • Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam (vertical and crosswise): the general 2-digit × 2-digit multiplication. 67 × 83 in 8 seconds, mental.
  • Anurupyena (proportion): for algebraic-style problems that reduce to a single equation instead of a full elimination. Saves 90 seconds per problem when it fits.

Worked example: 97 × 98 in JEE time

A JEE aspirant using standard long multiplication for 97 × 98: line up, multiply 8 × 97, multiply 90 × 97, add. Roughly 35 seconds of grinding with three chances to make a carry error.

A JEE aspirant using Nikhilam: 97 is 3 below 100. 98 is 2 below 100. Cross-subtract: 97 − 2 = 95 (left half). Multiply the deficits: 3 × 2 = 06 (right half, padded to 2 digits because base is 100). Answer: 9506. Elapsed time: 4 seconds. Zero risk of a carry error because there is no carry.

On a 60-minute exam, saving 30 seconds per question is not an optimisation. It is the difference between top 5% and top 30%.

Cognitive performance degrades measurably after 30–40 minutes of sustained mental effort. The degradation is steepest for methods with high working-memory demand.
