Sian Beilock and Marci DeCaro's 2007 study went further. They showed that under time pressure, students shift to simpler, faster strategies even when those strategies are less accurate than the approaches they'd normally use. The pressure doesn't just slow you down. It makes you choose a worse method. Students who are capable of multi-step reasoning under calm conditions start guessing at patterns or using shortcuts that don't hold up, because their brain is trying to solve the time problem before solving the math problem.

Time pressure causes students to abandon accurate, multi-step strategies in favor of faster but less reliable approaches. The switch is involuntary. Students capable of correct reasoning under normal conditions systematically underperform when speed is the primary constraint — not because they can't solve the problem, but because the pressure changes which solving strategy they reach for first.
