Why long multiplication breaks the ADHD brain at step 4

Russell Barkley's research on ADHD identified working-memory deficits as the core neurological feature — not attention, as the name suggests. Working memory is the mental "sticky note" that holds intermediate values while you do the next step. Neurotypical children can hold 5–7 chunks. Children with ADHD often hold 3–4.

Working memory capacity — the number of intermediate values a person can hold while executing a multi-step task — averages 5–7 items in neurotypical adults and 3–4 in children with ADHD. Multi-step procedures exceeding capacity fail catastrophically at threshold, not gradually.

Standard long multiplication of two 2-digit numbers requires holding 4 partial products, 2 carries, and one running sub-total simultaneously. That is 7 chunks — right at the neurotypical limit, well above the ADHD child's ceiling. When the ceiling is exceeded, the whole calculation collapses. Not gradually. All at once. Which is why "just try again" doesn't work.

Vedic multiplication uses one working-memory slot

Take 46 × 11. The Vedic rule: write the first digit, add adjacent digits for the middle, write the last digit. 4, then 4+6=10 (write 0, carry 1 to the 4 → 5), then 6. Answer: 506. Three digits produced, one carry, zero intermediate products to hold.

The Vedic method fits in one working-memory chunk because it's pattern recognition, not sequential procedure. And pattern recognition is exactly where the ADHD brain is often unusually strong.

Pattern-processing is a neurodivergent strength, not a weakness

Stanislas Dehaene's neuroimaging work on the arithmetic brain located pattern-based number processing in the parietal cortex — the same region that processes visual-spatial patterns, music, and language rhythm. Procedural step-tracking, by contrast, taxes the prefrontal cortex heavily. Kids with ADHD have well-documented differences in prefrontal function but often typical or above-average parietal function.

Pattern-based arithmetic processing occurs primarily in the left parietal cortex, distinct from the prefrontal circuits that handle sequential procedural execution. Individuals with prefrontal differences (ADHD, executive-function conditions) often retain typical or above-average parietal pattern recognition.
